WELCOME TO THE MEDICAL STUDY AID........
MEDQUIZ
by John DiSaia
ver1.1 SHAREWARE VERSION
***************************************************************
This Study aid uses a program called QUIZPLAY to present
medically-related questions in several formats. The bias is for
surgically-related questions as I am a general surgery resident.
The design is quite easy to use and the questions, although meant
for medical students, may be of use to select undergraduates. It is
compatible with the mouse and runs in DOS and WINDOWS (although
sounds will not work in the enhanced mode). Some graphics are
included dependent of course on your system's capability in this
area. Also sound effects are played at certain points of the game,
which use the PC speaker-No sound card is needed!
I. THE FILES
--------------------
*Med.doc -This file of instructions and info.
*QUIZPLAY.exe-The executable file that runs the various quiz
files.
Mterm_sw.qiz-The quizfile on Medical Terminology in the quiz
format. Try this file first. It is the easiest
and will get you comfortable with the system.
Surg1_sw.tst-The quizfile on Surgically-related Anatomy in the
"fill in" format.
Can_sw.mlt -The quizfile on Surgical Oncology in the multiple
choice format.
("name".voi) -Various sound effect files that are played when
you achieve certain achievement levels at the end
of each quiz (only in certain quizzes). - e.g.
exe.voi, gen.voi, keep.voi...
MEDSW.BAT -A small batch file that executes the program with
options for displaying this file, printing it, or
starting the question delivery. -NEW TO VER 1.1-
1,2,3.bat -Batch files that work with MEDSW.BAT.
medtl_sw.exe-Title screen graphic file.
meds.scr -Text file of options that appears with the
MEDSW.BAT execution
* This designates CORE FILES that SHOULD NOT BE DELETED in
sharing the program. Please also note that at least one quiz file
should be included so that the game can be played.
II. USING MEDQUIZ
--------------------
To execute the program enter MEDSW.BAT or MEDSW at the DOS prompt.
This will give you the title screen with options as mentioned
above in the files section. You may elect to bypass the title
screen and options by just entering QUIZPLAY. A menu will appear
from which you may choose the type of question you want to play:
Quiz, Test or Multiple-Choice. You will be shown the available
Quiz files of the type you have chosen. Highlight the file you
want and press <ENTER>.
QUIZ
If you choose QUIZ, you can either Play immediately or Review
the Quiz. The Review option will list all the questions
contained in the Quiz in a Menu format. If you highlight an
entry and press <ENTER> you will be shown the answer to that
question. This feature makes it easy to do well on the first
set, so I have disabled it in the other formats.
When you Play, you will be told how many questions are in the
Quiz and asked how many you want to try. The minimum is five
questions. The number you have requested will be chosen randomly
from the questions available and presented, eight at a time, on
screen. The answers to these eight will also be shown, in random
order. You choose a question, then choose its answer. If you
have correctly matched the question and answer, your score
will be increased. As each screen is completed, you will be
given the choice of Continuing with the next screen or Quitting,
until the desired number of questions has been presented. When
the final question has been answered, a comment on your
performance will be given. This will either be a written comment
or a voice file may be played.
TEST/MULTIPLE-CHOICE
If you choose TEST or MULTIPLE-CHOICE, then you will not be
offered an option to Review the questions. When you take a TEST,
you will be told how many questions the Test contains and asked
how many you want to try. The desired number of questions will
be chosen at random from the Test, and presented one at a time.
You type in the answer to the question, and if it is correct,
your score will be increased. At the end of each question, you
can choose to Continue or Quit. You may also be presented with
a choice - Information. If this appears on the Menu, it means
that there is extra information available on this subject.
Highlight and choose Information to see the extra material.
Taking a MULTIPLE-CHOICE is almost the same as TEST, but the
question is presented together with up to five answers, only one
of which is correct. If you choose the correct one, your score
will be increased and you may have the Information Option
described above. (If you play later and get the same question,
the answers will be in a different order because they are
presented randomly each time). You may also type QUIZPLAY
"quizfile.ext" to immediately run a Quiz or Test, bypassing the
menu.
III. DISCLAIMER
--------------------
This Study Aid is offered as an entertainment item only. While
efforts have been made to ensure accuracy, the information
herein should not necessarily be considered fact. It should also
be noted that on some items the"correct" response may be a
matter of opinion to different physicians or health care
professionals. No warranties are stated or implied. Mastery of
these questions does not imply competency in general medicine or
surgery nor is the program warrantied in any way, shape or form.
It is hoped that by review of this sort of material in this
format, study will be encouraged.
IV. REGISTRATION
--------------------
This software is presented on a trial basis only. After using it
for a reasonable period of time you are expected to register it
with the owner. Upon registration, REGISTERED VERSION question

shareware files have more questions than the shareware
versions). Current topics covered in the REGISTERED version
(1.1) include Surgical Oncology, Congenital Anomalies,
Pharmacology, Infectious Disease, Medical Terminology, and
Surgical Anatomy. In addition, sets on other topics
will be developed that will become available. Upgrades are also
in the works. The cost for registration is $15.00 (in US FUNDS).
California residents should add the appropriate sales
tax. Those outside of the USA should also add a handling fee of
$5.00 (again in US currency).

V. COMMON PROBLEMS
--------------------
1) The program MEDSW.BAT will hang up if executed from the Dosshell
after the title screen and options have been displayed. If you
remember the option you wish you can choose it. Otherwise, exit
from Dosshell and the launching program will run without hang up.
2) The voice files will appear distorted if the program is launched
from within Windows in the enhanced mode. The options are to reboot
Windows in the "real mode" or to exit to DOS and run the program
from the DOS prompt. Note that Windows 3.1 will warn you of the
problem when you launch the program indicating that it may not
function well.
